Sophia 4, from Chobham, Surrey, recently enjoyed a celebration at St. Peter’s hospital, where she has been receiving treatment, ringing a bell to signify the end of her targeted therapy.

Sophia was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) two and a half years ago, when she was just two years old. She has been receiving treatment at St. Peter’s Hospital until very recently. Sophia’s mum Lisa said:

“Sophia completing her cancer treatment is a real mix of emotions. Whilst it represents a huge milestone after two and half years, it’s not an all clear. It’s end of treatment. I think it’s important to recognise the moment, but you can’t hide from the fact life will never ever be the same. It’s time to make an adjustment and find another new normal for us as a family.

Sophia didn’t really understand what was happening at the bell-ringing event but she was excited to have her brother and her nursery team come and see where she spends a huge amount of time. For me, I wanted to capture the memory so we can replay it to Sophia when the time is right, show her how brave she was, and of explain the significance of ringing the bell. It’s a journey full of emotional highs and lows and the ringing of the bell was a moment in time to celebrate with friends and family.

As a family we have all benefited from Momentum’s support. Our Family Support Worker, Emma, was always there to check in with us and engage with Sophia when she was in hospital. Seeing a familiar friendly face, who understands, what you are going through is unbelievably welcome when you’re living in a very isolating situation.”

Sophia’s family recently completed the Great South Run for Momentum. Talking about the challenge, Lisa said:

“It was exhausting and emotional but amazing to know we raised £3000 to support families in similar or sadly even worse circumstances than us. Making memories through tough times makes a bigger difference than you can imagine, and we are all stronger for the experience.

We are now looking forward to exploring the world as a family. We can’t wait to open our home to friends and family without fear of Sophia having a temperature spike or weekend chemotherapy treatment. Simple sunny days to laugh and make great memories together will be cherished.”
